Exeter-based ‘Zero To Landfill’ waste management company, Devon Contract Waste (DCW) grew by over 18% last year and is on target to exceed that this year. To facilitate further growth the company now outsources the maintenance of its refuse vehicle fleet to Gloucestershire-based Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS).
Simon Almond, Managing Director, DCW, explains: “There’s a whole list of reasons why it makes sense to outsource the maintenance of our refuse vehicles. Firstly, these vehicles are very complex, expensive machines, and they require the attention of expert municipal vehicle engineers to keep them in tip-top condition. We’d rather focus on our core business - collecting, sorting and recycling waste – and improving the environment.”
DCW operates a fleet of 30 vehicles including 11 refuse vehicles. Since RVS took over the maintenance of the vehicles DCW has been able to control fleet replacements more effectively as well as monitor driver damage and improve health and safety.
Continued Simon: “We used to be very reactive when it came to the maintenance of our vehicle bodies; we just used to fix them when they broke down and hire replacement vehicles, which can be very expensive. Our vehicles need to be fit for purpose, reliable and they need to meet the highest safety standards. RVS take care of all of that and since they took over our we have seen an enormous reduction in vehicle breakdowns.”
In addition to providing preventative maintenance, repairs and service, RVS supplies cost effective refuse vehicles either new from stock (RediTruck), Remanufactured or Quality Used, as well as a full range of support services including vehicle hire, contract hire, parts and finance.
DCW also sources all of its refuse vehicles from RVS and uses the company for any vehicle remanufacturing work.
Simon added: “RVS understand our business and what we need from them. Nothing is too much trouble and the quality of work is of a very high standard. We now have a greater confidence in our trucks because they are being kept in superb condition. From a business perspective the preventative approach certainly pays off. Our business is more efficient and we’ve reduced our repair bills.”
