Quality Used Vehicles More Value For Taxpayers Money
When faced with introducing new collection services or having to fill gaps when vehicles break down or need servicing, many local authorities are finding that buying quality used or re-manufactured refuse vehicles is proving to be a quick and cost effective solution.
Traditionally Denbighshire County Council in Wales has bought new vehicles but during the recent role out of its new green wheelie bin service a gap in their fleet requirements was identified. In order to continue rolling out the service but without having to make any rash decisions about acquiring new vehicles, the authority chose to purchase a quality used refuse truck, a Dennis Elite 2 with Terberg Tinium split bin lift , from Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS). In comparison with a new vehicle the truck, which promises the same operational lifetime, cost less than a third of the price.
Chris Brown, Assistant Fleet Manager, Denbighshire County Council explains: “While we roll out the wheelie bins we want to take this opportunity to monitor the fleet we have to see if and what changes are necessary to best deliver our new service. RVS has an excellent reputation and when we visited their stand at RWM we could see first hand the quality of their work.”
“We decided to forego the cost and waiting time of purchasing a new vehicle and RVS delivered us an immaculate, fully MOT’d, serviced and re-sprayed used truck in under 5 weeks. It’s difficult to tell the vehicle apart from a new truck, such is the quality of presentation.”
Over at Malvern Hills District Council Danny Healey, Transport & Logistics Manager, was faced with the dilemma of needing spare vehicles for cover but finding it difficult to justify the expense of taxpayers’ money to buy or rent additional new vehicles.
Danny said: “I’d heard about RVS and got in touch with Spencer who had some second hand vehicles exactly like the ones we needed. They were only 5 years old and four weeks after we’d seen them, they were delivered to us.”
The vehicles, two 6x4 Mercedes Econic RCV’s with Terberg triple bin-lifts, were given a full service and MOT before being re-sprayed and supplied to the authority.
Danny continued: “I couldn’t believe they were the same vehicles. Put them side by side with our new vehicles and you can’t tell the difference.”
