What do you do with a batch of refuse vehicles returning from a municipal contract with an average age of 7.3 years? Faced with this situation recently, SUEZ, recycling and recovery UK (formerly SITA UK), took the decision to ‘recycle’ the vehicles and create an internal hire fleet to service its commercial trade waste fleet.
James Griffin, Technical Manager – Fleet at SUEZ said: “We took the decision to refurbish these vehicles because it’s important to us that we practice what we preach - to reuse resources wherever possible.”
Four refuse trucks, all Mercedes Econic with Faun Variopress bodies, were handed over to remanufacturing specialists Refuse Vehicle Solutions Ltd (RVS) who inspected the vehicles and drew up a detailed scope of works to refurbish the packer assemblies and bodies. All worn parts were replaced and defects corrected, before the repaired areas were repainted.
James continued: “Although we opted not to repaint them fully we were really impressed by the attention to detail. We were even given access to a Dropbox folder that was updated daily with pictures so we could view work in progress. The whole process was entirely transparent.”
RVS also went on to fabricate two full sets of recycling vehicle stillage containers to a high standard.
Spencer Law, Managing Director, RVS said: “Our engineers are so experienced and have so much specialist knowledge in refuse vehicles that I’ve yet to find anything they can’t do! Our aim is to maintain vehicles properly so that they achieve the maximum operational lifetime. If a customer buys a new vehicle from us we can help them to keep it in optimum condition to achieve 15 years+ service.”
James added: “RVS provides a cost effective and flexible alternative for us and the cost of the work they did for us was on a par with the Original Equipment Manufacturer.”
As well as providing New (RediTruck), Quality Used and Remanufactured refuse vehicles, RVS offers the full range of refuse vehicle support services so that customers can get everything they need in one place. These include: a comprehensive new, used and reconditioned Parts department with next day delivery; a Repairs and Maintenance service; Vehicle Ancillary Equipment such as weighing systems and Vehicle Safety Technology fitted as required; Temporary Vehicles available from its own Customer Support Fleet; Finance packages; and a Low Loader vehicle transportation service.
