What is Life Extension?

Our Life Extension Programmes are engineered to extend the operational life of existing refuse vehicles through targeted repair, refurbishment, and system upgrades. Using the same structured, engineering-led approach as our remanufacturing programmes, each project is carefully controlled to ensure safety, reliability, and performance—while focusing only on the areas that require intervention. This approach provides a cost-effective solution for operators who are not in a position to replace vehicles, enabling continued service delivery with reduced capital investment and improved asset longevity.

Consultation

Each programme begins with a detailed consultation to understand operational requirements, the vehicle’s condition and service history, budget constraints and the required life‑extension period. From this, a tailored scope of works is defined, concentrating on the areas of highest wear, risk or performance impact to ensure the intervention is both targeted and cost‑efficient.

Initial Testing

The body and bin lift are thoroughly decontaminated to remove waste residue and contaminants. Once clean, the vehicle undergoes initial functional testing to assess current performance, identify faults and defects, and establish a clear baseline for the targeted works ahead.

Engineering Review

A structured engineering assessment is carried out on the body, tailgate and bin lift to determine their condition and the level of intervention required. This review focuses on structural wear, hydraulic and electrical system performance, safety‑critical components and the remaining asset life. The outcome ensures that all work is driven by engineering need rather than assumption.

Targetted Strip-Down

Where necessary, selected areas of the vehicle are stripped back to expose key components and systems. This enables detailed inspection of wear and fatigue points, clear identification of repair versus replacement requirements and accurate documentation of condition. Unlike full remanufacture, this process is limited to assemblies that directly influence performance or safety.

Repair & Refurbishment

Targeted repair and refurbishment is carried out on the components identified during assessment. This may include structural repairs to the body or tailgate, refurbishment or replacement of hydraulic cylinders, renewal of hoses, valves and linkages, and electrical repairs such as sensor replacement or wiring upgrades. Bin lift systems may also be refurbished, including pivots, arms and safety mechanisms. All work is prioritised to maximise safety, performance and remaining service life.

Quality Assurance

All repaired and refurbished components undergo engineering inspection, safety and compliance checks and functional validation. This ensures that even targeted interventions meet the same defined quality standards applied across all RVS engineering programmes.

Reassembly

Refurbished components are reassembled and integrated back into the vehicle. This includes structural reinstatement, hydraulic reconnection, electrical system integration and the refitting of guards and safety equipment to ensure the vehicle returns to service in a safe and fully functional condition.

Testing

The vehicle undergoes comprehensive functional testing to confirm safe and reliable operation, validate the performance of repaired systems and ensure compliance with operational requirements.

Paint & Finish

Repainting is optional within Life Extension Programmes. Where required, this may involve localised repairs and protective coatings, partial or full respray, and fleet branding or finishing. Customers may choose to retain the existing finish to reduce cost where appropriate.

Delivery

The vehicle is returned fully operational and ready for continued service. Where required, guidance can be provided on ongoing maintenance, inspection intervals and recommended future interventions to support long‑term reliability.
