What is Reman?
At Refuse Vehicle Solutions (RVS), our reman process is a structured, engineering-led programme designed to restore refuse vehicles to a “like new” standard. Each stage is carefully controlled to ensure quality, safety, and long-term reliability. Unlike basic refurbishment, our remanufacturing approach focuses on a complete strip, rebuild, and verification of critical components, delivering a vehicle that performs – while significantly reducing capital cost and environmental impact.
Consultation
The process begins with a structured consultation to understand operational requirements, fleet strategy, lifecycle expectations and budget considerations. This stage also confirms whether the vehicle is technically and commercially suitable for remanufacture, while defining any customer‑specific final vehicle specifications that sit beyond the standard Reman scope.
Initial Assessment
The vehicle is fully decontaminated to remove waste residue and contaminants. Once clean, a detailed initial assessment is carried out on the body, tailgate, bin lift, and chassis interface. All equipment will be subjected to baseline functional testing to identify visual, hydraulic, and pneumatic faults, establish current performance and provide a clear starting point for the engineering programme.
Strip & Assess
During this phase, structural condition, wear tolerances and system functionality are evaluated and recorded to determine which components can be reused, which require repair or replacement, and where upgrades are necessary. This ensures the remanufacturing scope is defined by evidence rather than assumption, and creates a clear and auditable baseline for the rebuild phase.
Remanufacturing
The body, tailgate and bin lift are rebuilt through a controlled engineering process. Structural upgrades address wear, cracks and corrosion, while linkages and other moving parts are refurbished or replaced as required. As standard, the hydraulic pump, cylinders and hoses are renewed, and the electrical control system, sensors, safety‑critical components and wiring looms are replaced. Where beneficial, selected components are re‑engineered to enhance strength, reliability and service life. Once rebuilt, each assembly is finished, protected and passed through defined quality and safety checks.
Quality Assurance
All remanufactured components undergo engineering inspection, compliance checks and validation against defined standards. Only once approved are they released for reassembly, ensuring consistency and traceability across every project.
Remount & Reassembly
The receiving chassis—whether new or repowered—is prepared through dimensional checks and interface validation to ensure compatibility. The remanufactured body, tailgate and bin lift are then mounted and integrated, with structural installation, hydraulic connection, electrical commissioning and the fitting of guards, covers and safety equipment completed as part of this stage. The focus is on achieving seamless integration between the remanufactured assemblies and the chassis.
Testing & Final Inspection
The fully assembled vehicle undergoes comprehensive testing, including functional checks of all moving systems, hydraulic performance validation, electrical verification and safety inspections. Final assessments confirm that the vehicle is operational, road‑ready and compliant with all required standards.
Paint & Finishing
Before painting, the vehicle is shot‑blasted to remove old coatings, surface corrosion and contaminants, ensuring a clean and uniform substrate. It is then prepared through priming and surface finishing to achieve a durable, high‑quality paint application. Full livery requirements can be accommodated, including customer branding, colour schemes and fleet‑specific markings. A final pre‑delivery inspection confirms the overall finish meets both cosmetic and protective standards.
Delivery
The completed vehicle is delivered fully operational, tested and compliant, performing to OEM‑level standards. As part of the handover process, an RVS representative accompanies the delivery to guide the customer through the vehicle’s features, operation and maintenance expectations. Where required, the handover can also include driver training to ensure safe, confident and efficient use of the remanufactured vehicle from day one.
